It’s that time of year again, crocheters! Dust off your hooks, rummage through your yarn stash, because August 15th is Granny Square Day! Simply Crochet are back to celebrate this timeless stitch, a symbol of comfort, creativity, and connection that transcends generations.

The granny square, though its exact origins are a little fuzzy (much like a well-loved granny square blanket!), has been a mainstay of crochet for over a century. The 1970s in the UK were a time of bold colours, flower power, and a resurgence of all things handmade. It’s no surprise then that the granny square became a crocheting sensation. These cheerful squares, often made with leftover yarn in bright oranges, browns, and greens, weren’t just practical – they were a way to express personal style and create unique throws, bags, and even clothing that reflected the groovy spirit of the decade. Granny squares became a symbol of self-sufficiency and creativity, perfectly capturing the DIY spirit of the 70s, which has transpired into 2024. I became a lover of the granny square just after I learnt to crochet, anytime I have some scrap yarn, or don’t have an exact project planned, I’ll just make a granny square and usually stash it away somewhere. They often become coasters or if made in cotton become dishcloths…

The simple, repetitive nature of the stitch makes it perfect for beginners, while its endless potential for colour combinations and variations keeps seasoned crocheters endlessly entertained. And let’s not forget the history it holds! Granny squares have been passed down through families, each stitch carrying stories and memories.

But Granny Square Day isn’t just about nostalgia. It’s a celebration of the vibrant crochet community we have! There are countless resources online and in libraries bursting with granny square patterns, from classic to contemporary. Pinterest and Instagram are a great source of inspiration, with crafters uploading their own colourways and patterns for the humble granny square. Why not try a granny square with a floral twist, one featuring your favourite colours of the British countryside, or try something a little more detailed like a sunburst granny square?

So, this Granny Square Day, let’s raise a cuppa (or if you’re like me, a mint tea!) grab our hooks, and celebrate this wonderful stitch. Remember to tag your square on social media with the hashtag #GrannySquareDay2024 so we can help create the biggest virtual crochet blanket in the world! And a BIG thanks to our friends over at Simply Crochet, for holding this day each year! It’s always wonderful to see the hashtag form over the day!
