We’re well into September and what better way to ring in the cosy season than to cuddle up with a great read! Keeping autumnal tones and comfort in mind, this month’s Book Club pick goes to Stuart Hillard’s Quilts From The Country.
Popularly known both in and out of the warehouse for his stunning prints, Stuart Hillard’s left quite the mark on the quilting community. A popular regular on Sewing Street, Stuart also became a favourite on The Great British Sewing Bee, going on to become one of the UK’s most popular designers. In an interview with Talking Quilts some years ago, his passion for crafting began in his early years, as his mother taught him to knit from the small age of three. Over the years, he taught himself how to sew, creating quilts from scraps and honing his skills fuelled by the passion to learn. Fast forward to present day, Stuart’s expertise, designs and presence within the sewing community are not only celebrated, but extremely valued.
Although Quilts From The Country evokes those hunkering-down vibes, the book offers projects to quilt all year round, covering every season. Released just last year, the book encapsulates what Stuart does so well: delivering beautiful designs to suit many homes, people and spaces.

Alongside his beginnings in Gloucestershire, his father’s regaled tales of nature also serve as the main inspiration for Quilts From The Country. Stuart was encouraged to absorb the world around him, paying closer attention to the simplicities of both past and present. Featuring 20 projects to suit a range of skills, there’s something for everyone as Stuart takes us through the inspirations behind each season and project, along with full instructions on how to make each piece.
Over the years, Stuart Hillard’s worked with Craft Cotton Company and Lewis & Irene to bring his stunning collections to the public. His latest collection to the warehouse with Lewis & Irene is All Is Bright, a 17-piece festive collection, using checks, sprigs of holly and blooming ponsettias. It’s safe to say we can’t wait to see what he does next!
