Welcome back to Book Club! This month in July we’re going to be having a closer look at the Granny Square Book by crochet designer Katy Mitchell.

Katy Mitchell is well known for her Granny Square designs and themed blankets (take a look at her Instagram here). Last year she announced that she will be doing her first ever book, and crocheters like myself, couldn’t be more excited! The Granny Square Book is full of colour, inspiration and designs that will help you learn new stitches as you go.

The Granny Square Book focuses on fun and playful themes, with each square being worked up to the same size, making it easy to create your own unique projects. With 125 different patterns to choose from, you won’t be stuck for options, and you can also learn how to join and edge the squares to create a neat finish. One of the great things about Granny Square designs is the clarity of Katy’s instructions. The patterns are well written, in UK terms, and are easy to understand. Plus, there are helpful charts, diagrams, and photos to help you through each step. You can really feel the enthusiasm Katy has for the craft throughout the book, making it a joy to read and work from. She inspires creativity and encourages readers to put their own personal style into their projects.

The book is divided into themes, with options like summer, autumn, winter and spring, plus other themes based on animals. Some of my faves include the falling autumnal leaves and the acorns square! Whether you’re aiming to create a cosy blanket, a stylish bag, or a fun garment, this book offers you SO may ideas to get you started. Katy has put together so much more than just some patterns; it’s a helpful guide to learning different stitches when it comes to granny squares, which will inspire you to create unique projects.

Our chapter may have ended for this month, but we’ll be back soon with another Book Club pick before you know it!
