Whether dainty and delicate or bright and bold, flower power is the theme for this week’s Fabric Focus as we see Tilda’s lastest range kick it into high gear. After a small departure from the fabric department, we’re delighted to see its welcome return with such a pretty collection.
Wallflower marries past and present beautifully in this 32-piece collection, as we’re always thrilled to see essences of a retro revival back on our shelves. Via their lookbook, Tone Finnanger, founder and owner of Tilda Fabrics, talks about her inspirations behind this stunning collection:
“Wallflower is an ornamental collection loosely inspired by, and my somewhat romantic take on design styles popular in the 1960s and 70s. The name Wallflower takes me back to dancing school, at a time of my life where I was taller than all the boys and therefore doomed to be a wallflower. The ballroom had a distinctive 1970s floral wallpaper that I tried my best to disappear into, much like the shy girl in the Wallflower fabric design.”

Wallflower is perfect for fans of maximilism, as the varying sizes of florals can be utilised for a number of different projects. Whether used separately or together, it’s sure to prove quite the conversation starter. As for colourways, teals, caramels, and delft blues feature, alongside rich greens, vibrant pinks and cranberry. Whether you’re someone who prefers to keep similar tones together or a person who loves to mix things up a bit, Wallflower provides a truly stunning palette to pick from.
Now it wouldn’t be Fabric Focus without us selecting a couple of favourites, and with a 32-piece collection, it sure does come with a bit of difficulty – but let’s face it, we struggle when there’s only six! But as we never shy away from a challenge on this regular feature, our top choice this week goes to the signature Wallflower print, a design that’s had our hearts beating that little bit faster for the first week of August.

Pensive yet hauntingly beautiful, Wallflower finds herself tucked amongst the colourful blooms as she shies away from the spotlight; if only she knew how fond of her we are. Noting Tone’s autobiographical design, we admire her honesty when talking about the concept for the collection. Storytelling is one of our favourite elements a designer can add to a collection and, when done well, it adds yet another layer to its overall charm. The vulnerability of Wallflower in this design resonates with so many and we can’t wait to see how you encourage her ‘back to the dancefloor’.

You know we love to offer a little freebie here and there and, thankfully, the Tilda’s World website holds a wealth of free patterns for you to get stuck into. Showcasing the Wallflower collection perfectly, Tone touches further on her inspirations, showing us where her designs lead to these beautiful projects:
“Given the state of the world at the time this collection was designed and the inspiration behind the fabrics, it seemed fitting to promote some good thoughts through the naive but heartfelt Peace and Love quilts. The era also inspired the cute Campervan quilt designs where buttons are used as decoration on the wheels, and, of course, a whimsical flower quilt is a must.”

A lovely sentiment and a great way to inject some positivity into the world and spaces around us. Whether it’s the Campervan Quilt in petrol or putty white, the Wallflower Pillows or the Peace and Love Quilt in red and green, we’re sure you’ll find a pattern to inspire your make, as 12 patterns are available to download for free HERE.
