You might have seen our post a little while back with Autumnal makes for your home – well, we’re back with another edition but this time we’re decking the halls, instead. It’s time to have a think at the garden centre after you’ve fallen in love with another set of decorations; do you really need them? Hey, we’re not judging if they happen to slip past a barcode reader and are yours after entering a four-digit-pin. But sometimes, it’s worth having a ponder about what you may have tucked away that, as a crafter, you can make into pure magic.
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree…🎄
For many of us, our said ‘scrap’ stash may be a slight embellishment of the truth. Whilst we have bits and pieces here and there, there might be some larger pieces tucked away that you just couldn’t resist adding to your cart.
This cute pattern from Moda uses two fat quarters to make a seriously stunning Christmas tree. Yet where stashes and skills allow, you may be able to use those smaller pieces after all.
Patterns like these are not only fantastic for adding a little more festive fun into your home, they’re a great way of utilising some pieces you didn’t know what to do with. Plus, if you’re a little short of space, these cute ones won’t take up too much room and look really effective. You could adapt the pattern and make some mini ones, too!

Jingle ORT The Way 🔔
Some time ago, we shared some ideas on how to sort your ORTs HERE. For those who may be unaware, ORTs in the needlecraft world typically mean “odd remnants and threads” or “old ratty threads”. Many, like myself, will display them as a reminder of just how many pieces of work you’ve done. For a festive twist, you could split your colours into traditional or festive hues and fill a clear bauble.
Whether you’re hoping to reuse a set of translucent baubles or grab some new ‘split’ decorations to fill, the festive cheer will soon be ringing around the house! For a further tip, grab a dull wooden skewer or a chopstick to help push your ORTs into the tops of an existing bauble.

If you’ve got a fair amount of ORTs lying around, you’ll fill these in no time. However you choose to use your ORTs, when displaying, please be sure to keep fire safety in mind.
I Be-Wreath In Father Christmas ❄️
Whether you’re a knitter or a crocheter, it’s not uncommon to have a bag of little balls of yarn that you’ve not found a use for. Making a pom pom wreath is a great way to clear that bag.
Using a half polystyrene wreath, make and glue your pom poms directly to it. It’ll be quick to bloom and be ready to hang before you know it!
Your wreath may not be weather-safe, but this will surely give the inside of your door that bit of cheer as much as the outside.
As always, be sure to keep fire safety in mind when crafting and hanging your wreaths.
A Treat A Day 🍫
Who doesn’t love a little treat in the mornings? We know we do! DIY advent calendars have been quite the staple for some time now, offering a more personal twist to a December classic.
This Ruby Star Society free pattern certainly brings the cheer, especially as it’s a perfect way to use up those remnants that are tucked away.
Depending on your own personal stock levels, you may have to grab yourself some backing fabric. However, for the ornaments and windows themselves, your scrap bag may hold some serious gold here!

Whilst we’re all keen to save our pennies as much as we can as of late, topics of sustainability are also just as prevalent. Although this make may not stay in your home, it sure does begin there.
Using scraps of aida, why not craft your friends and loved ones some reusable tags? They’re fast to stitch and look great once they’re done – just make sure to take them back once those presents have been torn through!
These small makes will also make good use of old Christmas cards or other crafting scraps you may have laying around. Whatever you use, we’re sure the recipient will love both your gift and handmade tag.
