If you’ve ever reached for a ball of wool and immediately done the ‘neck test’ to see if it’s scratchy, you already know why Merino is the gold standard for crafters. If you haven’t dived into our Yarnsmiths Merino collection yet, then you’ll be in for a treat, as we’ve managed to tick all the boxes. It’s buttery soft, super affordable, and the colour choice is something of a whole other conversation!

The biggest Merino ranges would be our DK and Aran collections, with their colour palettes being the same as our Create and Cotton ranges, spanning a whopping 120 colours. Having 120 colours to play with means you can nail the perfect colourwash fades or find the perfect vintage shade you’ve had on your Pinterest board for months. Whether you’re a dedicated knitter or crochet addict, having that much choice feels like a kid in a sweet shop (I work here, and it’s incredibly hard!!)

While our solid colours are great for showing off crisp stitch definition, we’ve recently added a variety of different line ups to the Merino collection with Heathers and Tweeds. The Heathers have a lovely, soft blurred depth, where different tones have been spun together to give a sophisticated look to your finished projects. Our Tweeds were introduced in January, with both Aran and DK weights becoming part of the family. The classic nepps of colour pop throughout the yarn, giving a rustic, heritage feel to traditional sweaters and scarves, whilst keeping the beautiful softness of the Merino against your skin!
Our Yarnsmiths Merino is superwash treated, so you can pop your finished projects in the washing machine on a gentle cycle, making it a brilliant choice for baby garments, everyday wear cardigans, or gifts for friends and family who might not be the best at hand washing things!
With this in mind, I’ve put together some inspiring colour palettes below for your next projects….

This palette is inspired by the traditional rich tones of fair isle knitting with a modern, jewel-toned twist. Vintage Teal serves as the stunning base background, with colours such as Antique Gold, Sienna Red, Plum Purple serving as the perfect contrast, adding apop of colour, like Pinkberry to tie everything together perfectly.
For a fresh blanket that feels like a cosy morning by the seaside, use a mix of solid Merino shades with a few Heathers to add to the texture. Think Duck Egg and Glacier Blue, with a neutral shade such as Cream or Silver Mist, then go on to add some contrasting colours with Denim Blue and maybe even a Pale Lemon Yellow!

You could even put a twist on our Cedar Sweater (designed by Shelley Worth), adding some midnight tones for a moody twist. Put colours like Gunmetal Grey or Olive Green together and pair with Light Sage or Dark Turquoise, finishing off with a finer colour such as Celery.
We hope this introduction to our Merino range will inspire you to download one of our free patterns and get casting on…Shop here! Tooodaloo ✨🤗🌈
