Welcome back to Yarnwatch, our monthly check in on where we shine the spotlight on ranges within our warehouse. This month, we’re taking a deep dive into Drops, and their popular range, Fabel!
If you’re looking for a yarn that’s practical, colourful and wonderfully versatile, Drops Fabel is well worth discovering. This classic 4 ply sock yarn has become a favourite with knitters thanks to its balance of softness, durability and huge range of colours, both solid and prints!
Made from a fabulous blend of wool and polyamide, Fabel combines warmth and comfort with the strength needed for everyday wear. The wool keeps projects cosy, while the polyamide helps make the yarn harder wearing, making it ideal for socks, shawls and garments that can be worn again and again. Although it’s best known as a sock yarn, Fabel is far more versatile than many people expect. It works beautifully for shawls, lightweight jumpers, hats and other wintery accessories. The smooth texture also makes it a lovely choice for colour work and textured stitches (which we know you knitters love!)
The colour selection is one of the highlights of the range, with Drops frequently adding (to all their collections) with colours that are trending and popular amongst crafters. Alongside the classic solid shades, there are self-striping and printed colourways that create gorgeous effects with very little effort. Soft neutrals and earthy tones are perfect for timeless garments, while brighter blues, pinks and greens bring a playful feel to socks and accessories.
Shades such as Fairy Dust or Lavender Kiss, give a lovely sprinkle effect (quite like those old school cakes!), both shades have a mottled background, making the colour contrast not overly stark. You could also pair up with a soft solid shade like Pink, Wheat or Off White to keep the softness to the project. A shade I see on our tags images is Fantasy Land-the mix of shades are fun and vibrant, and the pattern the colours create is a little different. People love pairing this with solid black to really make the print stand out.
If you’re not sure were to begin, self-patterning shades are a great option for simple sock projects, while muted solids work beautifully for everyday wearables.
