What do you love most about British summertime? The chirping of fledgling birds, the instant shift from heatwave to thunderstorms, or the joy of casting on new projects with lighter yarns? For me, summer solstice is one of my favourite times of year. Yes, the days will eventually become shorter, which I’ll grumble about come September/October, but there’s a unique joy in the sunset glow as you sit in the garden or your favourite nook, crocheting or knitting a new favourite project. The solstice is a celebration worldwide, with many folks embracing traditions. In today’s post, we’re going to dive into some of our favourite yarns and patterns that make this time of year truly fabulous and bring a little mindfulness to your crafting.

We couldn’t start without mentioning West Yorkshire Spinners – Solstice, aptly named for the season! Like everything from West Yorkshire Spinners, this yarn offers an incredibly luxurious feel thanks to its 10% cashmere content. It drapes beautifully and comes in some wonderfully named shades like Honey and Nectar, which are personal favourites.

Now, I know 4 ply yarns aren’t for everyone, and I get it! My last 4 ply project is still in my WIP pile. For those who prefer something different, I recommend Yarnsmiths Pebble Haze. We released this back in Jan 2024, and itβs been a huge hit with you, as well as with staff. The halo type yarn keeps warmth, whilst also being breathable. The colour range is super, with favourites like Seaham and Saltburn sitting as the most popular. I’m secretly hoping weβll release a Prints version with mottled yellows and browns !

Patterns like the Hazy Sunshine Blanket by Cornwall Crochet shine with Yarnsmiths Pebble Haze. The finished look is fabulous, think blue skies, yellow suns, and white fluffy clouds. You could easily adapt this simple pattern into a bag, hat, or cardigan.
Another pattern is the Starlite pattern by Alice Tarry. We’ve only recently started stocking her patterns, and my gosh, she knows how to work with colour! Although this blanket uses seven different blues, one purple, and one yellow, you’d think the pattern called for a colour changing yarn. It’s exceptionally beautiful, which is why I’ve added it to my must make list. While the description mentions chilly and dark nights, I absolutely envision this blanket draped over a chair on a summer evening, with the sun just dipping below the horizon and the moon beginning to awaken. You can buy the pattern and yarn pack here.Β

And lastly, King Cole Linendale is the perfect DK weight yarn, with a fabulous array of patterns. The linen touch makes this yarn perfect for summer makes, giving a nice drape. Patterns vary from summer tops and cardigans, which will be easy to cast on in any moment.
However you spend the longest day of the year, there will always be an option to craft! Take time to relax and enjoy the warmth of the sun hitting your face, your newest project, and maybe a nice cool drink! Subscribe to the Craft Room below ‡οΈ
