The semi-final, themed ‘Rags to Riches Week,’ saw the final four contestants diving into the world of sustainable style in the Yarn Barn. This week tested the makers with turning scrap materials and old garments into high-end fashion pieces – something we love to see!
The individual brief was a ten-hour mission to create a functional handbag from repurposed materials. It had to survive a 2kg weight test, which added extra pressure to the crafters. Lydia blew the judges away with a bag made from colourful wax print cotton, using a clever ‘lined stitch’ that looked just like a luxury woven fabric. Holger also sailed through with a smart crochet saddle bag featuring his signature buttons. However, the slow prep of hand-cutting “yarn” caused real trouble elsewhere. Isaac spent too long spiralling his T-shirt yarn and failed to finish his zip, while Ailsaâs bag, made from old gym leggings, unfortunately sagged under the weight without enough structural support.

For the team project, the pairs had ten hours to transform charity shop Aran jumpers into catwalk dresses. Lydia and Holger were a dream team, creating a dramatic, avant-garde dress with massive balloon sleeves and colourful godets that moved beautifully. It was pure high fashion. In contrast, Isaac and Ailsa opted for a ‘Tinkerbell’ style look with leaf-shaped segments and a corset back. While the bodice fit was praised, the overall finish was a bit messy, and the judges felt it lacked the “wow” factor needed for a semi-final.

In the end, Holgerâs consistent flair earned him his third sheep baa-dge of the series. Sadly, despite his massive heart and creative spark, the unfinished bag and the less impressive dress meant Isaac was cast off this week. In the final we will see Holger, Lydia and Ailsa craft it out, and we can’t wait to see what the tasks will be! đâšâ€ïž
