There are some yarns that we stock that really catch a crafter’s eye straight away, and that’s what happened when King Cole released Firefly Aran. It’s a gorgeous yarn that looks beautiful sitting in the ball, but really comes into its own once you start working with it! Inspired by the iridescent colours found in beetles, dragonflies and other winged wonders, Firefly Aran has a distinctive sheen that gives every project that little something extra. It’s not a glittery yarn, instead it has a shimmer that moves across the surface, catching the light as the fabric changes direction. The result is a soft, pearlescent glow that makes finished projects feel a little more special.

Firefly is available in 12 colour shades, each taking inspiration from our natural world. There’s Firebug, Tiger Beetle, Glow Worm, plus the newer shades, Sapphire Damselfly, Jewel Wasp and Emperor Moth. The colours have plenty of depth, moving through the tonal shades rather than sitting as one flat colour. Depending on the light, you can notice completely different shades within the same ball, which makes choosing a favourite difficult!
Firefly Aran is made up from 65% polyester and 35% acrylic, with each 100g ball containing 200 metres of yarn. It knits on 5mm needles, making it an accessible Aran weight for everything from garments and accessories to larger amigurumi pieces. Since its launch. Firefly has really caught the attention of you crafters, with 131 fabulous projects on Ravelry.

King Cole have also released some patterns to go alongside the popular range. The collection includes jumpers, cardigans, scarves and hats. There’s also a crocheted long sleeved top, which gives crocheters plenty of opportunity to see how Firefly behaves beyond knitting. One of the lovely things about the patterns, is that they’re all quite simple detail, meaning the yarn does all the talking – which is what we want!
