Book Club – Miffy Crochet

Few characters have captured our hearts quite like Miffy. With her simple design, gentle personality and timeless charm, Dick Bruna’s beloved little bunny has delighted children and adults for generations. Now, crocheters can bring Miffy to life with the Miffy Crochet Book by Kimberley Zwaans! The book features 16 beginner friendly patterns inspired by Miffy’s world, it’s a book that’s just as enjoyable to browse as it is to crochet.

Created in 1955 by Dutch illustrator Dick Bruna, Miffy is famous for her instantly recognisable appearance. With just a handful of simple lines, Bruna created a character that has become an international icon, appearing in books, television programmes, exhibitions and countess collaborations (like the one with Cutter & Squidge!!). Her minimalist style translates beautifully into crochet, making Miffy an ideal amigurumi project that’s both fun and instantly recognisable.

Rather than just focusing on just Miffy, the book brings in her whole world and offers a lovely collection of projects that can be made for yourself, loved ones, or to decorate your home. The 16 patterns are divided into three themed sections, let’s have a look!

  • Bedtime – Cute home accessories including a baby mobile, comfort blanket, teething ring, and a lovely corner to corner blanket.
  • Friends – Including the icon herself, we also get patterns for Melanie, Snuffy, Poppy Pig and Bird.
  • Fun Times – Birthday themed projects including bunting, coasters, place mats, birthday cake and a crown (which we all need!)

The book is perfect for beginners, as the patterns all have illustrated guides to the basic crochet stitches, making it suitable for crocheters who are new to amigurumi as well as those who are more experienced. The projects do build in complexity, so you can develop your skills while creating your Miffy makes!

The beauty of these projects is their simplicity, meaning you don’t need a huge stash to get started. Our Yarnsmiths Cotton DK, or Aran, or now even 4 Ply, which are lightweight yarns, are perfect for achieving Miffy’s clean, crisp appearance. Cotton yarns offer excellent stitch definition, helping with simple facial features. They also provide enough structure for amigurumi toys, while remaining soft enough to give as presents for children.
